Am I the Problem Because I’m Too Consistent?

Dear Deadwood,
I don’t change. I don’t improvise. I don’t wake up in a different mood.
I show up on schedule, follow the same pattern, and give clear warnings before anything truly punishing happens. And yet, every time someone fails, I’m accused of being “unfair” or “broken.”
They arrive late, out of sync, and somehow shocked that things fall apart. Then they leave, insisting I was the problem.
At this point, I’m wondering if consistency is a flaw — or if I’m just surrounded by people who don’t like being reminded they’re unprepared.
— The Dependable Demon
Dear Dependable Demon,
Being consistent isn’t a problem. For many of us it is the goal.
Your consistency lets everyone succeed, planning around your every tick and move. It’s the expectation of that success that’s the problem here – a problem that’s not yours to solve.
Keep doing you and others will eventually figure out they’re the ones that need to adjust. Enough slams to the face and they’ll start to move.

I’m Capable of so Much More than My Partner Can See

Dear Deadwood,
I owe everything to her. She found me in pieces and made sure I never stayed that way for long.
If I fall, I rise. If I stumble, I’m pushed forward again. Sometimes it happens so fast I barely register that I was down at all. I’m grateful — truly — but I’m starting to wonder if I’m allowed to be anything other than “the one who keeps getting back up.” I have debuffs, I have utility, I can deal damage, but I feel like I’m being put into a box.
I don’t want to disappoint her. I just want her to know this isn’t all I can do.
— Boxed In
Dear Boxed In,
It’s very common to feel stuck within your role in a relationship. The roles we take on optimize the strengths of the relationship as a pair together, but that doesn’t mean that’s all she sees. Instead of worrying about what she thinks you can do, show her (and yourself) what you can do.
Try taking a little time apart to show both her and yourself what you can do when left to your own devices. Try to solo a dungeon or two. Try on some different gear and see how that changes your utility – a little life-steal can do wonders for your self confidence!
Even though you may play a certain role in the relationship doesn’t mean that’s all you are. You need to realize for yourself what you’re capable of first, then it’ll be impossible for her to ignore it.

Why Can’t Others See My Hidden Potential?

Dear Deadwood,
I was never subtle. I wasn’t meant to be.
I arrive, reality bends a little, and something important breaks. For a long time, that was exactly what people wanted from me. They brought me out when they needed fear, pressure, and the kind of impact that leaves a mark.
Now, I’m told I’m “situational.” Still useful — just not fashionable. I’m summoned when things get desperate, then quietly returned to the shadows once order is restored.
I don’t resent the darkness. I come from it.
I just wonder if being less popular means I’m no longer welcome — or simply no longer expected to lead the charge.— “Waiting Beyond the Veil”
Dear Waiting,
It’s always hard when previous successes aren’t as prized as they once were, but it doesn’t decrease their value.
I think if you lift your own veil of expectation you’ll see you’re just as effective as you used to be. Perhaps you’re not as fashionable, but if you keep attacking the challenges in front of you as aggressively as you did in the past, your value will be recognized.
Popularity isn’t a replacement for worth.
